Lights of Old Town

THE NOCTURNALIST

Last night, I wandered around Old Town Square for an hour or so by myself, photographing faces in the crowd. It was surprisingly busy for 10:30 p.m. I still had to maneuver around several groups of tourists, but that’s part of the fun. It’s an interesting experience to be in a foreign town yet not feel so out of place because there are several other tourists in your immediate vicinity, all sharing in the newness of seeing Prague for the first time. All the local street performers had packed up their respective shows and left the square as soon as night fell, but the tourists stuck around to watch the lights come on, grab a late dinner or enjoy the cool night air.

As soon as the street lamps glow orange in the dark and Tyn Church is lit from below, Old Town Square hums with a different kind of life than it does during the day. People in the square at night laugh a little more loudly, sing more songs and get closer to each other. There are no street performers to distract visitors from each others’ company. At night here, it’s just you, your friends and the lights of the city. It’s romantic. It’s Prague.
